the physical and human features that help us distinguish one place from another. This character may be linked strongly to the natural environment but also cultural features in the landscape given by the peopel who occupy that place.
what are the physical things that shape the character of a place?
topography-physical features of an area
geology-rock type and soil
what are the human things that shape the character of a place?
dialect-form a language which is particular to a specific region
accent-a distinctive way of pronouncing a language especially associated with a country, area, or social class
distinguish between exogenous and endogenous factors.
exogenous factors are the external fact0rs which affect place and its relationship with other places whereas endogenous factors are the internal unique character of a place, this could be the local demographics, characteristics and the physical geography of a place.
what are the place endogenous factors?
-topography, geology-hills, mountains, rivers
-infrastructure-motorway, train, airports
-demographic characteristics-age, ethnicity, gender
-location-height, coast
-land use-urban, industrial agriculture
what are the place exogenous factors?
-people-migration and flow of people
-resources-availability of natural resources
-money and investment-deindustrialisation and globalisation
-ideas-people’s thoughts and opinions of a place
what does Yi fu tuan suggest?
attachment to a place grows over time and as u have more experiences in a place you are more likely to be attached
define topophilia and topophobia.
topophilia-love for a place
topophobia-dislike of a place
near and far places.
near-somewhere physically close to and it is subjective
far-somewhere that is distant could also be emotionally distant
what is genius loci?
the spirit of a place and suggests every place has a unique spirit or atmosphere.
