Population and Environment Inroduction Flashcards
define population
the amount of people living in a defined area
define pop density
the amount of people living in an area per unit e.g. per km2
define pop distribution
the spread of people over a certain area
what are the physical factors that affect pop?
climate
soil
natural resources
what are the food development process factors that affect population?
the Neolithic revolution and the green revolution
what is the Neolithic revolution?
12,000 years ago where there was a shift from mobile
hunter-gatherer populations to agricultural communities.
Birth rates and fertility rates rose as a result. Agriculture could feed denser communities and therefore had a more stable food supply.
what is the Green revolution?
using technology and more efficient farming practices in agriculture to maximise yields in the 50s and 60s. Overall it created more food, especially in developing countries, meaning a larger population could be sustained. Estimated 1 billion people fed from it
what are the societal development process factors that affect population?
industrial revolution-start of the Industrial Revolution, the population grew by 57%, and 100 years on the population grew by 100%.
what are the global population numbers?
-global pop stayed under1 billion until 1804 and it only over 100 years for it to reach 2 billion.
-estimated to reach 9 billion by 2050
what percentage of the world lives in urban areas?
55%
what are some examples of sparsely population areas?
Sahara, central Australia and Canada
