Pool Questions 11 Flashcards
T/F The knee cartilage is one of the most often cartilage destroyed by rheumatoid arthritis
False (Katelyn said it was supposed to say osteoarthritis, and if it does say that then it is true)
What is the function of the meniscus?
Increase the surface area by up to 30% for dispersal of force on knee
What is a bucket handle tear?
A tear around the inner rim of the medial meniscus, causing the central portion (the bucket-handle) to displace into the joint.
(The meniscus tears and flips into the center of the knee, like moving a bucket handle from one side of the bucket to the other.)
Why is the semitendinosus used for an ACL replacement?
Because it is the middle muscle of the hamstrings and removing a portion for a graft does not affect the pull of the hamstrings muscles
Why does the medial collateral ligament suffer injury more often?
Most injuries result from a valgus force on the knee from direct contact or with cutting maneuvers when an athlete plants his/her foot and then forcefully shifts directions.
What function do menisci serve?
Increase surface area for dispersal of force on knee
T/F The Achilles tendon is the strongest tendon in the body
True
T/F The plantaris is a long muscle in bipedal animals
False
T/F Maintaining posture is aided by soleus activation
True
T/F Relative to the gastrocnemius the soleus is superficial
False
T/F Both the soleus and gastrocnemius have a common insertion into the Achilles tendon
True
Describe the dynamic tension that occurs to the knee cap and to which direction it “wants” to displace?
Bowstring dynamic from angle of femur makes patella of knee want to displace laterally
What is the surface upon which the patella rides?
Patellar groove of femur
What quadriceps muscle is likely to atrophy quicker than the others during immobilization?
Vastus medialis
T/F- All three of the hamstrings are biarticulate muscles
True
