How were the liberal democrats created?

A

In 1981, the gang of 4 (Roy Jenkins, David Owens, Shirley Williams and Bill Rogan) broke away from the Labour party after it became to left wing. They called themselves the SDP. The SDP gained an alliance with the Liberals and getting 23% of votes in GE whilst Michael Foot struggled.
After the alliance the 2 party’s merged calling themselves ‘The social liberal democrats’
Finally in 1999, Paddy Ashdown they became ‘The Liberal Democrats’

A

Candidates must be nominated by 10% of mps
20 local parties and 200 members (ordinary members included)
All members vote using STV and the winning candidate must have 50% of 1st preference votes

A

Weren’t many MPs standing after coalition due to backlash. Only had 8 Mps so very limited

A

He lost his seat and was no longer an MP meaning they went against own rules as has to be an MP
