Plaque and Bleeding Score Flashcards
1
Q
why do we need a plaque index
A
- standardized way of itnerpreting clinical observations of plque present on teeth putting patients at risk for oral health diseases
- numerical value % given for observing an individuals ability to practice good oral hygiene care at home and used for patient understandins
- other dental indices: bleeding, caries, recession, gingival inflammation, furcation involvement
2
Q
what are disclosing agents
A
products used to help dental clinicians identify plaque on dentition
3
Q
what are dislosing agents used for
A
- method for patient education when discussing caries and perio disease
- helps patient comprehend oral hygieve instructions and visually see plaque being removed by toothbrushing and flossing methods
4
Q
things to know with liquid disclosing agents:
A
- be aware red dye can easily stain clothing and surfaces
- ask the patient if there is any allergy to red dye, considering it is a main ingredient in the solution
5
Q
how do you obtain a plaque index using liquid/chewing tablet disclosing agent
A
- place a few drops of the agent in a cup and apply to patients teeth using cotton tip applicator or give the patient the tablet to chew using tongue to smear surfaces of teeth
- give patient water to thouroughly swish and rinse out any excess agent and have them expectorate prior to evaluation
- allow patient a moment to evaluate the stained plaque with a mirror prior to collecting data
- recrod the surfaces where you see stained plaque, consider that there are 6 surfaces per tooth
6
Q
how do you calculate plaque index manaully
A
- total # of teeth x 6 = total surfaces
- total surfaces x 100 = % total surfaces
% is patients plaque index
7
Q
why do we need a bleeding index
A
- standardized way of interpreting clinical observations of bleeding present with probing putting patients at risk for oral health diseases such as gingivitis and periodontitis
- numerical value given for observing bleeding upon probing
- other dental indices: plaque, caries, recession , gingival inflammation ,furcation involvement
8
Q
what does BOP indicate
A
ulceration of the JE indicating inflammation
9
Q
what does plaque score aid in
A
- assessing oral hygieve instruction needs of patient
- determining whether patient is a good candidate for surgical periodontal therapy
- give clinican indicator for why caries control and periodontal conditions are at current level
10
Q
what is bleeding index helpful for
A
- identifying gingival disease
- allows clinician to educate patient on better oral hygiene techniques
11
Q
the 2 tone disclosing agents tell you:
A
- blue stain is old plaque
- red stain is new plaque
