Planes of Movement Flashcards
Sagittal Plane
A vertical plane, which passes from front - rear separating the body into right and left parts.
Frontal Plane
Passes from side to side at right angles to the sagittal plane, separating the body into front and back sections.
Transverse Plane
Horizontal plane that separates the body into upper and lower parts.
Frontal Axis
- Bypasses from side to side at right angles to the sagittal plane.
- Allows flexion and extension.
Sagittal Axis
- Bypasses horizontally from front - rear lying at right angles to the frontal plane.
- Allows abduction and adduction.
Vertical Axis
- Bypasses from head to foot at right angles with the transverse plane.
- Allows rotation of the body in an upright position.
Sagittal Plane - Frontal Axis Movement
The rotation in a high board dive is an example of movement in the sagittal plane and around the frontal axis.
Frontal Plane - Sagittal Axis Movement
Rotations in a gymnastics cartwheel is an example of movement in the frontal plane about the sagittal axis.
Transverse Plane - Vertical Axis Movement
Movement in a full twist jump in trampolining is an example of movement in the transverse plane about the vertical axis.
Plane
An imaginary flat surface that divides the body into different parts.
Axis
An imaginary straight line around which someone turns.
