Long & Short Term Effects Of Exercise Flashcards
Muscle Fatigue
When you exercise, your muscles can feel weak, painful and tired.
Cramp
- Severe sort of muscle fatigue.
- Causes the muscles to contract in a painful way.
- Happens when someone is hot, tired, dehydrated ir poor fitness level.
- Result of anaerobic respiration.
Lactate Accumulation
Build up of lactic acid.
Lactic Acid
- Toxic
- Makes muscles ache, causes cramp.
- Rest until oxygen gets to the muscles.
- A colourless acid produced in muscle tissues during strenuous exercise when the body is exercising anaerobically at high intensity.
Stroke Volume
The amount if blood pumped by the heart during each heart beat.
Will increase during exercise as muscles will need more blood.
Heart Rate
When you exercise your heart beats faster. Heart rate is the number of times your heart beats per minute.
Cardiac Output
Amount of blood pumped by the heart in one minute. The two factors that determine your cardiac output are you heart rate and stroke volume.
Equation of Cardiac Output
Heart Rate X Stroke Volume = Cardiac Output
Oxygen Debt
Result of anaerobic activity, where your muscles do not receive enough oxygen so your body tells you to take in deep gasping breaths to bring in as much oxygen as possible.
Tidal Volume
- The amount of air which enters the lungs during normal inhalation and at rest.
- Average tidal volume is 500ml.
- Same amount leaves the lungs during exhalation.
