- More accessible energy source than fat.
- Break down into glycogen or glucose, by small intestine then into blood.

Passed into blood, transported to liver and then circulates around the body.

- Once cells have used as much glucose as it needs, some excess is stored in liver, ready for when blood gluvose levels drop too low.
- The rest is stored as fat for long term storage
