what is it?
A
usually panhypopituitarism - rarely affects individual hormones

what causes it?
A
primary or metastatic tumours - Rathke cleft cysts
traumatic brain injury
subarachnoid haemorrhage
surgery or radiation
granulomatous inflammation - sarcoidosis, tuberculous meningitis
infarction/ haemorrhage
- Sheehan’s syndrome
- apoplexy - neurosurgical emergency (headache, diplopia - pressure on CNIII, hypopituitarism, CV collapse and loss of consciousness)
hypothalamic lesions
- also causes diabetes insipidus, tumours - benign (craniopharyngioma) or malignant (glioma or metastases)
