Hypoglycaemia Flashcards
1
Q
what are the usual causes?
A
missed/delayed meal not enough carbohydrate at last meal increased physical activity too much insulin alcohol (esp. on an empty stomach) tight control (little reserves for unexpected events)
2
Q
ways to reduce risk?
A
carry an emergency supply of carbohydrate and diabetic ID
check BG frequently (esp. before bed)
never consume alcohol on an empty stomach
be aware that stress/illness/exercise affects BG levels
3
Q
how is it managed?
A
concern for T1DM and T2DM treated with insulin
15-20g of rapidly absorbed carbohydrate (glucose tablets or glucose/sugary drink)
4
Q
how does exercise cause hyperglycaemia?
A
exercise with low insulin - low glucose absorption into muscle
low muscle glycogen
secretion to glucagon - resulting in excess glucose
5
Q
how does exercise cause hypoglycaemia?
A
high dose of insulin and intense exercise
