Adrenocortical Hyperplasia Flashcards
1
Q
What is adrenocortical hyperplasia?
A
- When adrenal cortex is larger than it should be
- Can be congenital or acquired
2
Q
Pathogenesis of congenital adrenocortical hyperplasia?
A
- Group of autosomal recessive disorders
- Deficiency/lack of enzyme required for steroid biosynthesis
- Altered biosynthesis leads to increased androgen production
- Reduced cortisol stimulates ACTH release and cortisol hyperplasia (10-15x normal weight)
3
Q
What does increased androgen production cause?
A
Masculinisation
Precocious puberty
4
Q
Pathogenesis of acquired adrenocortical hyperplasia?
A
- Endogenous ACTH production
- Bilateral adrenal enlargement
- Diffuse or nodular
5
Q
What drives diffuse adrenocortical hyperplasia?
A
ACTH driven
6
Q
Which type is nodular acquired adrenocortical hyperplasia?
A
ACTH independent
7
Q
What does endogenous ACTH production cause?
A
Pituitary adenoma (Cushing's disease) -Ectopic ACTH: Paraneoplastic syndrome
