Paget's Disease Flashcards
what is it?
Abnormal osteoclastic activity which is followed by increased osteoblastic activity
abnormal bine structure with reduced strength and increased fracture risk
can be a single site - monostatic or multiple sites - polyostotic
who gets it?
can be a viral, environmental or biomechanical trigger in genetically predisposed individuals
increased incidence with age
what bones does it affect?
long bones
pelvis
lumbar spine
skull
how does it present?
bone pain deformity deafness compression neuropathies osteosarcoma - rare complication can be an incidental x-ray finding or isolated high alkaline phosphate
how is it diagnosed?
x-ray
isotope bone scan shows disease distribution
biochemistry shows raised alkaline phosphate with otherwise normal LFTs
how is it managed?
bisphosphate
pain can be treated with analgesia if unresponsive
