Bridge Procedures guide, Checklist for Pilot Boarding

Pilot ladder is properly rigged and secured in place
Access complies with the requirements of Resolution A 29
A lifebuoy with a light is rigged
A Seaman is standing by with a heaving line
The area is adequately lit (forwards) and clear of hazards
The OOW is in direct comms with the Bridge
Suitable PPE is available if required
The pilot is escorted safely to the Bridge
Role of the Pilot
The Pilots role is to provide expert knowledge to the Bridge team about the pilotage passage in question. They are to be fully integrated into the Bridge team, and is the interface between the Ship and the Shore
The presence of the Pilot on board does not relieve the Master or the OOW of their responsibility of the navigational watch
Information the Pilot may give to the Bridge Team:
- Navigational and Environmental Information outlined in the Pilotage Plan
- Comms with Port control/VTS
- Expected traffic during pilotage
- Tug Service
- Line handlers
- Outlying weather factors that will influence the pilotage plan
- Use Standard Maritime Communication Phrases
Role of the OOW/Master on watch during Pilotage:
- Maintain overall responsibility of the safety of the vessel despite the Pilots Presence
- Integrate the Pilot into the bridge team via:
Master/Pilot Exchange card
Manoeuvring Card/Wheelhouse Poster
Alert them to any crewing limitations that may affect the passage - Make Pilot aware of LSA
- Make Pilot aware of any current issues with steerage/Machinery
- Monitor the vessels progress along the Pilotage Plan
- Politely seek clarification from Pilot when in Doubt
- Inform the Master if still unsure of such doubt
- Take any necessary action to keep the vessel safe and avoid standing/grounding
What is a Pilot card?
A pilot card is a card with information pertaining to:
- The Ships Machinery, and the relationship between RPM and speed
- Ships Particulars
- Ballast speeds and information
- Time to full ahead/Full astern
What is in the Master Pilot Exchange card?
An almost combination of the Wheelhouse poster/Pilot card, With added boxes for information pertaining to current defects
What is in a Wheelhouse Poster?
Ships Particulars
Propulsion particulars
Steering Particulars
Thruster information
Chain Particulars
Loading/Draft Particulars
ROT and max rudder angle information
