What is the Large Yacht Code? (LY3)
Current version of the LYC
The LYC is a code created by the Red Ensign Group, Which provides a framework for British flagged large yachts to follow and comply with international conventions and regulations
2 parts to LYC
Part A, up to 12 passengers
Part B, Passenger yachts (>12 passengers)
What is the Red ensign Group?
A collaboration of UK shipping registries, whose purpose is to combine resources, in order to maintain standards and safety across the British fleet
What is MLC 2006?
When was it ratified in the UK and when did it come into force?
Maritime Labour Convention 2006.
Convention under the International Labour Organisation, the 4th pillar of Int. Maritime Law
Provides an international framework for the fair treatment and rights of ALL seafarers employed on vessels

5 Titles of the MLC
- Minimum requirements for seafarers to work on a ship
- Conditions of employment
- Accomodation, recreational facilities, food and catering
- Health protection, medical care, welfare and social security protection
- Compliance and Enforcement
What is a seafarers employment agreement and what does it entail
Contract between employer and seafarer, pertains to:
Rights and responsibilities under employment
Pay and annual leave
Hours of rest
Repatriation
Insurance and medical care
Codes of conduct
Drug and alcohol policy
Safety policy
Lines of communication within company and complaint procedures
Essentially anything outlined in MLC
Must be signed before joining and not under duress
Certificates required for vessels and company under MLC:
Company will have a declaration of compliance
Vessel will have a MLC certificate
Who does not have to have a SEA
Master, who must still have some form of employment agreement
Any supernumeraries, not part of the crew
Minimum HOR
77 per week
10 hours in any 24 hr period
Broken up in no more than 2 periods
One period no less than 6 hours
What HOR are young persons between 16y and 18y entitled to?
Not allowed to work at night
2 days off a week
break every 4.5 hours
