A

Appointed by the ship, in charge of vessel security
Responsible for organising drills
They will have undergone shore-based training for SSO

Company Security Officer CSO

A

Designated by the company, responsible for the Ships Security Assessment (SSA)

Development and implementation of the SSP

Responsible for modification of the SSP, and for dealing with non-conformities

A

A

Essentially a logbook that stays on board for the vessels entire life, recording changes of management, ownership, operations etc.

A

A plan detailing the vessels security protocol on board. Half of this is sensitive and protected.
It is stored in a private location, not known.

A

As per 2004, most ships are fitted with a secret, quiet alarm system, that alerts shore facilities to a security threat on board.

A

A declaration stating the actions to be taken between port facility and the ship, with reference to the security relationship between the two.

A

A

Access is monitored and crew are familiar with their details as per the SSP

Signing on and escorting as appropriate

Officers are aware of which parts of the SSP limited access is allowed

Security equipment is in good condition

Drills are carried out

Searches are carried out as per SSP

Records are maintained

CSO is always available

SSAS is operational

A

Every 3 months
When a captain or officer has rotated in/out
When entering an area of higher MARSEC level than the crew is accustomed to

How do you know your vessel is ISPS compliant?

A

Flag state will have issued a certificate of ISPS compliance

Role of the SSO?

A

Ensure compliance and maintenance of the SSP by personnel

Maintain security at all times

Responsibility of personnel with shipboard seurity duties

Ensure that contact is established and maintained with the PFSO’s at the Port Facilities that the ship uses

Liaise as necessary with PSOs/PSFOs or other facilities/officials with security responsibilites
