Passage planning on an ECDIS Flashcards
What is a safety contour?
A specific depth contour, user-set on ECDIS. It demarks the boundary between safe water and shallow water with an extra wide Isoline.
It will alarm if the ship, within a time specified by the mariner, is going to cross the contour
How do we set the Safety Contour, as seen in NP100 and the BPG 2022?
Draft, + UKC + allowance for sqaut/heel + Safety margin, Minus the HOT
What is a Safety Depth?
A value set by the mariner that Darkens any depth that is less than the depth. Often set to the same as the Safety Contour
Which MGN gives guidance on the use of risk assessment methodology when operating ECDIS in RCDS mode?
MGN 285
What is one of the main benefits of ECDIS with regards to a passage plan route?
Route check, with user set safety margins denoting the alarms and indications along the passage, prior to monitoring.
The OOW should still check the route visually, in 1:1 compilation scale, and have it approved by the master before monitoring.
