Piaget Stages Of Cognitive Development Flashcards
Explain Sensorimotor stage.
It’s a cognitive stage of Piaget
This stage last from: birth - 2 years old
Child learns to manipulate environment in order to meet physical needs.
Deals with Object permanence*: where they learn that objects continue to exist even when out of sight
Also, Primary circular reactions: repetition of body movement that occurred by chance “sucking the thumb”
And Secondary circular reactions: when manipulation is focused outside of the body “toy throwing”
Explain Pre-operational stage.
It’s a cognitive stage of Piaget
This stage last from: 2 - 7 years old
Characterized by Symbolic thinking: the ability to pretend.
Also, Egocentrism: the inability to imagine what another person may think or feel.
And Centration: inability to understand conservation
Ex: two one inch papers is more than one 2 inch paper
Explain Concrete operational stage.
It’s a cognitive stage of Piaget
This stage last from: 7 - 11 years old
No more centration and egocentrism
They are able to engage in logical thought if they have tangible materials “concrete” or information that is available.
Explain formal operational stage.
It’s a cognitive stage of Piaget
This stage last from: 11 - death
Think logically about abstract ideas rather than just with concrete resources.
