Broca And Wernicke Flashcards
What is the difference between Broca’s area and Wernicke’s area? What happens when both or one of the areas are damaged. And are the connected?
Broca’s area helps with actual speech and language expression; it is located in the frontal lobe.
When damaged it is called Broca’s aphasia (broken speech) and it usually involves the slurring of words, halting, just problems with the production of speech.
Wernicke’s area helps with understanding speech itself and is located in the temporal lobe.
When damaged it leads to Wernicke’s aphasia, which involves symptoms such as, non sense sentences, and unable to understand the speech received.
When you have both it would be called global aphasia.
Both areas are connected by the arcuate fasiculus. When damaged conduction aphasia occurs, which leads to someone able to retrieve a message but cannot repeat it even if understood.
