Piaget Flashcards
What is a schema?
schema; a mental container we build to hold our experiences.
Schemas can take the form of images, models, and/or
concepts.
How might assimilation and accommodation be used with schemas?
For example:
a girl might encounter a cat and have a dog schema
she can either:
assimilate the experience by referring to the cat as a “dog”
or
accommodate her animal schema by separating the cat or different types of dogs into different schemas.
What are Jean Piaget’s stages of development?
sensorimotor: Experiencing the world through senses and actions
preoperational: Representing things with words and images; using intuitive rather than logical reasoning
concrete operational: Thinking logically about concrete events; grasping concrete analogies and performing arithmetical operations
Formal operational: Abstract reasoning
