Cognitive and physical development Flashcards
What is puberty?
Puberty is the time of sexual maturation (becoming physically able to reproduce).
What do increased sex hormones lead to?
primary and secondary sex characteristics.
changes in mood and behaviour.
During adolescent brain development how does the brain become more efficient?
The brain stops automatically adding new connections and becomes more efficient by “rewiring.”
“pruning” away the connections not being used
coating the well-used connections in myelin, in order to
speed up nerve conduction
What is emerging adulthood
It is a new phase that happens between the ages of 18-25 and it is where there is delayed full adult independence.
What physical abilities come with biological maturation in our mid 20’s?
muscular strength
cardiac output
reaction time
sensory sensitivity
As we age what abilities decline?
visual acuity
hearing
reaction time and general motor abilities
neural processing speed
What are the stages of motor development for a baby/infant/toddler
Sitting unsupported (6 months)
Crawling (8-9 months)
Beginning to walk (12 months)
Walking independently
What does cognition mean?
Cognition refers to the mental activities that help us function
