Hereditary influences on behavior Flashcards
What is Deoxyribonucleic acid and what is it short for?
DNA is a molecule that contains the genetic material of an organism.
What is a gene?
A section of DNA with the same arrangement of chemical elements.
What is a chromosome?
tightly wound strand of genetic material/DNA
What is the difference between dominant and recessive genes?
Dominant genes are when a gene actively controls the expression of a trait
recessive genes are when a gene only INFLUENCES the expression of a trait when paired with an identical gene
What are evolution and natural selection?
Evolution- a process of gradual change over time
Natural selection - the principle stating that inherited characteristics that give a survival advantage are more likely to be passed on to future generations.
what is Neuroplascity?
it is the brain’s ability to change the structure and function of many cells in response to trauma and experience (like doing new sports/hobbies)
