Physiology of breathing Flashcards
Airway, Respiration, Ventilation
The Physical Act of moving air into and out of the lungs.
Ventilation
An insufficient amount of oxygen delivered to the tissues
Hypoxia
Amount of air in the lungs simply to keep them open
residual volume
what two things’ contracts during inhilation
Diaphragm and intersoctal muscles
External vs internal respiration
External- Gas exchange in lungs
Internal- Exchange of O2 and CO2 at cellular level
How does air enter the lungs?
Air enters through the nose or the mouth into the pharynx. It proceeds down the windpipe to the left and right bronchi to the bronchioles. Then air goes to the alveoli. This is when gas exchange will occur.
What does the pons control
breathing rate and depth
inhalation is caused by
negative pressure
Exhalation is caused by_pressure within the lungs
positive
How does your diaphragm move when you inhale
Downward
What type of process is exhalation
passive process because it pushes air out
Normal, unlabored breathing
Eupnea
diffusion
The movement of gas form an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration
formula for minute volume
respiratory rate x Tidal volume
When the thoracic cavity expands, what happens to the pressure
A negative pressure is created drawing air into the lungs
