Anaphylaxis Flashcards
Body’s abnormal overreaction to an allergen, an allergen that is often otherwise harmless
Anaphylaxis
Reaction to an allergen that there has been prior exposure to, causing systemic hypotension and inflammation/edema
Anaphylaxis physiology
Anaphylaxis S/S
Warm/flushed skin
Angioedema
Urticaria
Stridor
SOB
Decreased LOC
N&V
During anaphylaxis when the body over releases the hormone histamine, causing profound hypotension and bronchoconstriction, as well inflammation and edema
Histamine response
Common anaphylactic triggers
Peanuts
Shellfish
Bee stings
Latex
Medication
Hives, red itchy welts
Urticaria
Swelling caused by edema of the throat, lips, face, and tongue
Angioedema
Medical device often carried by individuals with an anaphylactic allergy
Carries a pre-determined dose of epinephrine that will automatically inject intramuscularly when administered correctly
Epinephrine auto-injector (Epi Pen)
Most pressing concern when treating a patient in anaphylaxis
Airway patency
Important non-medicinal component to anaphylaxis management
Emotional reassurance and support, anaphylactic events are often very scary for the patient/family
