physics topic 6-waves Flashcards
what can’t s-waves travel through?
can not travel through liquids or gases
what can p-waves not travel through?
solids and liquids
do p waves or s waves travel faster?
p waves
what type of waves are s waves?
transverse
what type of waves are p waves?
longitudinal
how do ultrasound waves produce an image?
ultrasound waves can pass through the body, but whenever they reach a boundary between two different media some of the wave is reflected back and detected
what are some uses of ultrasound waves?
-pre-natal scan of a foetus
-detect tumours
-animal communication
-kidney stones
-detecting cracks in machinery
what type of wave has the highest wave length?
radio waves
how are gamma rays used in medicine?
a gamma-emitting source is injected into the patient, and its progress is followed around the body
how do x-rays produce an image?
x-rays pass easily through flesh but not easily through bones or metal. its the amount of radiation absorbed that gives you an image
what type of wave has the highest frequency?
gamma rays
