Physics - Measuring length and volume π Flashcards
What are the two devices we learnt that are used to measure very small units?
Micrometer screw gauge and Vernier calliper.
What is the smallest measurement a micrometer screw gauge can make?
0.01mm
What are the 3 different measurements a Vernier caliper can make?
Depth, Inner diameter, and outer diameter of an object.
Where do you put the object you are measuring on a micrometer screw gauge?
Put the object between the anvil and the spindle, located in the middle of the U-shaped frame.
How do you see how long an object is on a micrometer screw gauge?
You count how many increments are on the sleeve (the part that doesnβt rotate, and see how many increments are visible, each increment is half a millimeter. Then, on the rotating part, see which part lines up with the line on the sleeve, and measure that accordingly. Finally, do this formula:
(measurement on sleeve) + ((measurement on rotating part) Γ 0.01)
What is volume?
The space in a 3D object.
How do we measure volume of a liquid?
With a measuring cylinder.
What is the method to carefully measure liquid?
- Place the cylinder on a flat surface
- Check the unit on the measuring cylinder
- Put your eye at level with the liquid
- Measure the bottom of the meniscus
What is the error that occurs when liquid is not measured at eye level?
Parallax error
What is the meniscus?
The curve down at the surface of a liquid
What is a regular shape?
A shape with predictable measurements, that βfall under standard shapesβ
What is the formula to find the volume of a sphere?
4/3Οr^3
What is the formula to find the volume of a cube?
lΒ³
What is the formula to find the volume of a cuboid?
lΓwΓh
What is the formula to find the volume of a cylinder?
ΟrΒ²Γh
