Photosynthesis Flashcards
What does NADP stand for?
Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate
What does ATP stand for?
Adenosine triphosphate
What does ADP stand for?
Adenosine diphosphate
What is the equation for photosynthesis?
6carbon dioxide + 6water —–>glucose + 6oxygen
(Light + chlorophyll)
What is the role of photosynthesis?
1) Plants use it to make food
2) Animals get food from plants
3) Produces oxygen for respiration
4) responsible for fossil fuels
Equation for photolysis of water?
2water——–>4Hydrogen ions + 4electons + oxygen
(Light)
Equation for ATP?
ADP + P—–>ATP + water
Pathway 1?
1) Energised electrons move along a series or electron acceptors
2) The energy from electrons is used to make ATP
3) [ATP EQUATION]
4) The electrons return to chlorophyll molecule
5) Process called cyclic photophosphorylation
What happens in the light stage?
1) Light is absorbed- pigments absorb variety of wavelengths apart from green light
2) Light energy is transferred to electrons- light energy moves along pigments to chlorophyll reaction centre. Here electrons become energised and move from electron acceptor along pathway 1/2
Equation of NADP(+) to NADP(-)?
NADP(+) + 2electrons—->NADP(-)
What are the products of the light stage?
Oxygen
NADPH
ATP
Pathway 2?
1) 2 electrons leave electron acceptor and moves along a series of electrons acceptors
2) 2 electrons don’t return but bond with NADP+ to make NADP-
3) photolysis of water occurs breaking water into components
H2O—->2H+, 2e- and half O2
4) 2e- moves to chlorophyll molecule to replaced lost ones
5) H+ combines with NADP- to make NADPH
6) Called non-cyclic electron flow
Is the dark stage temperature dependent?
Yes as it involves enzymes
What happens during in the dark stage?
1) Carbon dioxide diffuses into the leaf via stomata
2) Carbon dioxide is converted into glucose via reduction
3) The H+ and e- to form glucose come from the breakdown of NADPH
NADPH—>NADP+, 2e- and H+
4) Energy for conversion comes from breakdown of ATP
ATP+water—->ADP+P+energy
