Cell Diversity Flashcards
What is a tissue?
A group of similar cells that are modified (or adapted) to carry out the same function(s).
What is tissue culture?
The growth of cells in or on a sterile nutrient medium outside an organism.
What is an organ?
A structure composed of a number of tissues that work together to carry out one or more functions.
What is an organ system?
Organ system consists of a number of organs working together to carry out one or more functions.
What are the 4 basic plant tissues?
Dermal, vascular, ground and meristematic
Name the 4 basic animal tissues.
Epithelial, connective, muscular and nervous.
What does in vitro mean?
Outside in body
What does in vivo mean?
Inside the body.
What are the main conditions necessary for tissue cultures?
1) . Absence of other micro-organisms
2) . Food, vits and minerals
3) . Substances to stimulate growth. i.e. Hormones
What are some uses of monoclonal antibodies?
1) combine with specific, single type of antigen.
2) . Used to attach to and show presence of antigens on cancer cells.
Name organs in plants.
Root, stem and leaf
In which order are multicellular living things organised?
Cells-tissues-organs-organ systems-organism.
What are forms of tissue cultures?
Micropropagation and monoclonal antibodies.
What is micropropagation?
The growth of large numbers of plants from cells, tissues or small parts of a plant to rapidly produce new genetically identical plants.
