Human Nutrition Flashcards
What does autotrophic mean?
Organism can make its own food
What are omnivores?
Animals that eat both plants and other animals
What are carnivores?
Animals that only eat other animals
What does heterotrophic mean?
Organism cannot make its own food
What is the human dental formula?
2(I2/2 C1/1 PM2/2 M3/3)
What are incisors for?
Cutting, slicing and biting
What are canines for?
To grip, stab and tear
Describe incisors
Chisel shaped w/ sharp edges
Describe canines
Long and pointed
Well developed in carnivores
What are molars for?
To crush and chew
What are premolars for?
To crush and chew
Describe premolars
Cusped on surface
Describe molars
Large
What is mechanical/ physical digestion?
breakdown of food using teeth
What is chemical digestion?
Breakdown of food by using enzymes
What does the oesophagus do?
Carries food from mouth to stomach
What is the involuntary muscular contraction in the oesophagus called?
Peristalsis
The sequence of human digestion?
- Ingestion
- Digestion
- Absorption
- Egestion
What is ingestion?
Taking of food into the alimentary canal
What is the alimentary canal?
Tube from mouth to anus (gut)
What is digestion?
Breaking down of food by mechanical and chemical digestion
What is absorption?
Nutrients absorbed from food
What is egestion?
Removal of unabsorbed and undigested material from digestive system
What are herbivores?
Animals that feed only on plants
What is the function of the stomach?
To store and digest food
What is in the stomach?
Mucous
Pepsinogen
HCl
What is pepsinogen?
An inactive enzyme that when in contact w/ HCl becomes pepsin. This converts proteins into peptides.
What protects the stomach from self-digestion?
- Mucous (alkaline) lines stomach wall
- Pepsin is created after it enters stomach
- Cells are tightly packed and rapidly replaced
What is the function of the pancreas?
To produce:
- Insulin
- Sodium bicarbonate
- Amylase and lipase
What is the substrate for lipase and what product is formed?
Substrate- lipids
Product- fatty acids and glycerol
What is the function of HCl acid in the stomach?
- To activate pepsinogen into pepsin
- Kills bacteria
- Denatures salivary amylase
What is the function of the liver?
- To detoxify body
- To produce body heat
- Store vits and mins
- Convert excess carbs to fat
- Make bile
- Convert glucose to glycogen
- Break down excess amino acid into urea
- Produce fibrinogen
- Makes cholesterol
What is the function of the rectum?
To store faeces
What is the function of the ileum?
To absorb nutrients
What is deamination?
Excess amino acids being broken down in the liver to form urea
What is the function of villi?
Digestion in duodenum and absorption in ileum
What is the function if the lacteal?
Contains lymph which absorbs fatty acid and glycerol
What are the adaptions of the small intestine for absorption?
1) Very long
2) Numerous villi/microvilli
3) Walls of villa are v. thin
4) Rich blood supply to carry away water-soluble products
5) Villi have lymph supply to carry away fats
