Classification And Heredity Flashcards
What is a species?
A group of similar organisms that are capable of naturally interbreeding with each other, but not with other such groups, to produce fertile offspring.
What is variation within species?
Means that in a group of successfully interbreeding organisms the individual members show different characteristics.
What is heredity?
The passing on of features from parents to offspring by means of genes.
What is a gene?
A section of DNA that causes the production of a protein.
What is gene expression?
The precise way in which the genetic information in a gene is decoded in the cell and used to make a protein.
What is taxonomy?
Study of classification.
What is classification?
Placing organisms into similar groups
What is classification necessary to do?
- Simplify the study of organisms
2. Allow scientific communication.
