Blood collection - Remember
-Blood ammonia must be placed in ice slurry right away (usually lavender topped, make sure question asks about ammonia specifically)
-Must label tubes + specimens in front of patients
-Drug screening must be tested that day and must use chain of custody
-prevent internal or external bleeding by applying pressure once needle is out
-Blood specimen should be held upright to develop necessary clotting and prevent hemolysis, *unless additives require inversions
Urinary Collection - Remember
-After 24hr urine collection, you must make sure it has been refrigerated - first void is not collected
-Urine output for 24hrs should be 750-2000ml
-WBC in urine is infection
-Protein in urine is infection or inflammation
-Bilirubin in urine indicated liver disease
-Ketones = fat metabolism (like malnutrition)
