Ostomy types
A
- Colostomy: colon, feces
- Illeostomy: liquid from small intestines
- Urostomy: waste from ureter tubes

Ostomy Feces types
A
- Ascending colon: Fluid to Semifluid feces
- Transverse colostomy: Mushy feces
- Descending Colostomy: Semi-mushy to solid feces
- Sigmoid colostomy: solid (formed) feces

Steps 1-2
A
- Remove ostomy belt (if patient has this type of device
- Hold skin taut and peel off the ostomy appliance from the top, gently pushing through skin away from the skin barrier portion if the appliance

Steps 3-4
A
- Place appliace in bed pan
- Wipe away any feces in the stoma and around the stoma gently with toilet paper and place toilet paper in bed pan

Steps 5-6
A
- Place gauze over the stoma in case any stool comes out while performing care
- Take the bed pan to the bathroom and dispose if it’s contents and your gloves

Steps 7-8
A
- Return to the patient with a basin of WARM water (40.5 C - 43.3 C, 104 F - 109.94 F)
- Remove gauze and wash skin around the stoma with plain water. Rinse and dry the area thoroughly

Steps 9-10
A
- Apply skin adhesive if it is necessary with the type of system the patient has
- Place a clean ostomy belt on patient (if that’s what’s being used)

- Check the opening of the new appliance to make sure it is the right size
- Peel off the backing from the skin protectant wafer (* Cut 1/16th larger than the circumfrance of the stoma) and center of the opening around the stoma, * MAKE SURE to hold for 1-2 minutes, create tight seal

Steps 13-14
A
- Fold the bottom patch up, clamp the bag, and depend on type that is used
- Make sure the patient is comfortable, discard supplies, remove gloves and perform hand hygiene
