Immobility splints
A
Stabilizes an extremity after an injury or surgery. If applied correctly, it will minimize the pain of dislocations, fractures, soft tissue injuries, and postoperative pain

- Apply them to the distal part of the extremity first, working your way to the PROXIMAL (closest to body) part. Ex. Applying a splint to the forearm, start with the wrist and work your way to the elbow
- Always remove jewelry on the affected limb prior to applying a splint

- After applying the splint, check for circulation, movement, and senses action in the areas beyond the splint. Check temperature and color, making sure it’s not too tight
- Most splints will require the patient to keep the extremity elevated, reduce edema, and pain
