Immobility splints

A

Stabilizes an extremity after an injury or surgery. If applied correctly, it will minimize the pain of dislocations, fractures, soft tissue injuries, and postoperative pain

Common rules for splints
1-2

A
  1. Apply them to the distal part of the extremity first, working your way to the PROXIMAL (closest to body) part. Ex. Applying a splint to the forearm, start with the wrist and work your way to the elbow
  2. Always remove jewelry on the affected limb prior to applying a splint

  1. After applying the splint, check for circulation, movement, and senses action in the areas beyond the splint. Check temperature and color, making sure it’s not too tight
  2. Most splints will require the patient to keep the extremity elevated, reduce edema, and pain
