NG tube

A

Inserted through the nose into the stomach
More temporary option

Steps:
Hand hygiene
Position patient upright, comfortable position
Cover chest with towel
Measure from tip of nose to earlobe with NG tube, then to xiphoid process of sternum
Lubricate end of tube
Tilt head slightly back and insert tube into nare
Tip head forward and advance the tube as patient swallows
Once marked point is at end of nare, secure tube
Discard supplies appropriately
Hand hygiene
-Ensure patient is sitting at least 45* during feedings

A

Type of tube feeding placed through the abdomen into the stomach
Used more long term, longer than 30 days

A

tube is placed through abdomen into middle of small intestine (Jejunum)
Used more long term
Used if reflux is an issue with G tubes

G Tube & J Tube Care

A

Hand hygiene
Look around tubing for signs of infection and skin breakdown
Clean with warm, soapy water
Rinse with warm water
Dry skin very well
Put dressing on as needed
Hand hygiene
Rotate button as needed
Burp the tube as needed
Make sure to clean all extension pieces as well
Document all cleanings and report abnormal findings
Cleaning the G or J Tube should happen at least once a day!
