Pharmaceutical packaging Flashcards
1
Q
Reasons for packaging
A
- Used to contain medications - microbes in
- Protection of medication
- Identifies and advertises medication
- Ensures complience and delivery of medicenes
2
Q
Primary pack
A
- Contains the blister pack which has direct contact to medicines
- Materials used for packing glass, metal, plastics airtight seal from oxyen and dust
- Must be compatiable with drug
3
Q
Secondary package
A
- Contains multiple blister packs at a specific number
- Ancillary components
- Patient information leaflet & spoon and spatula
- Paperboard and hard plastics (light and mechanical protect)
4
Q
Glass
A
- SiO2 in a 3D network and it is not consider as polymetric
- Good barrier for properties
- Amber glass filter out damaging wavelengths of light
- inert fragile and inexpensive
- Can be recyled
- Autoclaved resistant to heat
5
Q
Neutral glass
A
- Boric oxide, aluminium oxide and earth oxides
6
Q
Soda-lime-silica glass
A
- Alkali oxide
- Sodium oxide and other oxides mainly calcium
7
Q
Testing for quality of glass
Hydrotic resistance of inner surface of glass container
A
- Use an acid base titration surface test
8
Q
Testing for quality of glass
A
- Autoclave
- Fill with water
- Titrate against 0.01 HCl with methyl red indicator
9
Q
Plastics
A
- Polymers used for packing
- Can be strong ridgid clear thermoplastics
- Breakable flexible thermosetting
- Dependant on amorphus or crystline
10
Q
Amorphous polymer
A
- Example PVC which has good transparancy
- Oftern plasticized more permiable to water
11
Q
Crystalline polymer
A
- PVDC Polyvinalidene chloride
- Tough stiff and chemically inert
12
Q
PVC and PVDC
A
- Commonly used in blister pack manufacture
- Mix of the tough and easily coloured with brittle and water vapour resistant
13
Q
Polypropylene
A
- Good heat resistance and can be autoclaved at 121
- Used when ridgidity is required
14
Q
High density polyethylene
A
- Non impermeable to vapours
- Good heat resistance can be autoclaved
15
Q
Polyethylene terephthalate
A
- Less permiable to oxygen HDPE
- Absorbtion of presevative paraben reducing the potency of medicine
