What is trait theory ?
- Individuals are born with innate characteristics called traits
- Traits are stable and stay the same through different situations
- Trait tries to predict behaviour
- E.g.An extrovert is likely to be loud and chatty during training
What is social learning theory’s opinion on personality ?
- characteristics are developed through association
- behaviour is learnt from significant others (friends, family etc)

4. Copy
What is the interactionists perspective on personality ?
- explains how aspects of our personality are developed
- looks at how behaviour of sports people can be influenced by genetic and environmental factors
- Interactionist perspective is a combination of trait and social learning theory
What was Lewin’s perspective ?
- Interactionist perspective
- behaviour is adapted to suit a situation
- B = f(p*e) - behaviour is a function of personality and environment
- Consistent traits are adapted to an environment to produce a typical response
What was Hollander’s interactionist perspective ?
Personality is made of 3 factors:
1. Core of the performer - Values and beliefs
2. The typical response (Inherent traits are displayed to a specific situation)
3. Role related behaviours - performer adapts to a specific role when it is required
- the more the environment has an influence, the more likely the behaviour
- e.g. predicting a behaviour to avoid a red card
What is the credulous approach to the interactionist perspective ?
Link between behaviour and personality is accepted
What is the sceptical approach to the interactionist perspective ?
Link between personality and behaviour is doubted
How does having knowledge of the interactionist perspective improve performance ?
- predict player behaviour (remove the situation)
- recreate situations in training
- offer advice - allows support for individuals to adapt
