What are 3 benefits of goal setting ?
- Increasing motivation
- making sure athletes keep trying
- sense of pride increases the intrinsic motivation - Improving confidence
- through an improvement in technique
- through achieving a target - Regulating and sustaining effort
- as a performer get’s closer to reaching a target, they try harder
What are outcome goals ?
- A goal set against the performance of others
- Based on a result
- Success based
- E.g. Finishing in the top 5 of the league - if realistic, motivation is maintained
What are the issues of outcome goals ?
- Outcome orientation - may lead to a loss of technique
- Danger of losing motivation if unrealistic goals are set
What are performance goals ?
- Goals judged against previous performances to improve personal achievements
- Aims to better own performance rather than comparing against others
- Reduced anxiety and provides more consistent motivation
What are process goals ?
- Based on improving technique
- Used as a base for a better performance
What is the SMARTER principle ?
Specific =
Goals should be clear and relevant to improve specific aspects of performance
Measurable =
Assessed with statistics and scores
Achievable =
Goals within that a performer should be able to reach
Realistic =
The goals should be within reach to promote motivation and sustain effort
Time-Bound =
Short-term and long-term goals. Steps defined so that their are clear deadline to assess whether the goals have been met
Evaluate =
The performer and coach should assess strengths and weakness for how and when the goal was achieved to help in future goals
Re-do =
If the goal hasn’t been reached or is taking too long, or something could’ve been done better - the goal is re-done
