Leadership:
A
- Someone who influences you towards your goals
- Leader plays a role in maintaining effort and motivation by inspiring and setting targets

- Emergent

Emergent leader:
A
- Already belong to the group
- Selection can be voted or the role is assumed

- Selected from outside of the group

- already familiar with team members
- understands the team dynamics
- respects = players will listen to their voice

Limitations of emergent leaders
A
- ‘too familiar’ with the team - may not be taken seriously
- Hard to make a difficult decision when teammates are friends

Advantages of prescribed leaders:

- new ideas from the team
- distance from the team

- Don’t understand the team dynamics
- Decisions based on knowledge rather than the team

- autocratic

Autocratic leaders:
A
- task-orientated
- make all the decisions
- motivated to get results and reach targets
- complete task as quickly and effectively as possible
- Don’t delegate
- Quick decisions for large groups
- If the coach isn’t present, the group may fail

Democratic:
A
- person-orientated
- democratic leaders have a sympathetic approach
- seek groups opinions before decision is made
- delegate responsibility
- consultation - develop meaningful relationships
- Group works when the coach isn’t present

Laissez-faire:
A
- allows group to make their decisions
- leader does very little
- effective if group has lots of experience
- if a group isn’t experienced, cohesion breaks down
- all styles are effective if used at an appropriate time
- need to take into account the group and situation if using this style

Fielders contingency model of leadership:

- autocratic leadership is used when the situation is favourable and least favourable
- when the situation is moderately favourable, democratic is the best

Chelladuri’s multi-dimensional model of leadership:

- 3 influences that interact to produce effective leadership
- Situational characteristics = the type of tasks (simple/complex)
- Leader characteristics = experience and personality
- Group member characteristics = age, gender and experience
- Leaders cab use an interactive approach to balance these aspects
- If the leader uses a style which matches the group requirements, then they perform better
