When can Permissive Working be used?
In a TCB area only.
Where authorised in SBSI (Signal box Special Instructions).
When does Permissive Working NOT apply?
For shunting movements being made with a traction unit into an occupied section to attach/detach/remove vehicles.
What classes of train are allowed to work permissively on Goods or Passenger lines (other than platform lines)?
3 to 8 and 0
What classes of train are allowed to work permissively on Platform lines?
1,2,3, ECS, 5, 9 and 0.
Also any class of MPV when operating as a Rail-Head Treatment Train (RHTT) or Inspection Train.
When must you not allow Permissive Working?
In times of poor visibility
(Except on Platform lines, because they are illuminated).
Before you clear the signal to allow a train to enter an occupied section of a platform line what must you ensure?
There is enough room for that train.
(However, you don’t have to do this if the signalling equipment will only allow you to clear the signal if there is sufficient room).
If movement has already been authorised on a platform line on which you intend to signal a 2nd train, what must you get before you clear the signal for the 2nd train to enter?
Confirmation from the person in charge of the movement, that it has been completed.
If a train is not booked to call at a station , but you need it to be sent via an occupied platform line, what must you do before signalling that train onto the platform line?
Tell the driver what is happening.
You must NOT allow a 2nd train to enter an occupied platform IF _______
you have already cleared the signal for the first train to leave that platform.
You must NOT allow a train to leave a platform, after you have signalled a 2nd train into that platform line UNTIL _______
that 2nd train has come to a stop at the platform.
In an emergency, you may allow a train conveying passengers to enter an occupied signal section to reach a station platform IF _________
Authorised by SSM or Ops Control to do so.
After receiving permission to do so, what must you do before allowing a train conveying passengers to enter an occupied signal section to reach a station platform?
There is enough room to safely deal with the train at the platform.
Tell the driver what is to happen, to pass the signal at danger and, once at a stop in the station, to make No Further Movements without your authority.
