As per GERT800 TS1, 13.7
What is the ‘crossing the line’ procedure used for?
To cross no more than 4 lines,
If a structure must be walked past that has limited clearance from a running line.
Who can use the ‘crossing the line’ procedure?
A COSS/IWA walking alone, or with a group.
When only can the ‘crossing the line’ procedure be used?
If authorised at your location
AND
you have been given details about the crossing location and the conditions for using it
AND
The COSS/IWA is competent to use the procedure
AND
You have been given the COSS/IWA’s name (on a list in the signal box)
AND
the person requesting access is contacting you from a mobile phone, with which they will use to remain in contact with you, throughout the process.
What must the requester tell you, when requesting to use the ‘crossing the line’ procedure?
Exact location they will be crossing the line/passing the structure
Their name and employer
How long it will take for them to cross the line(S) or pass the structure
What MUST you do if you lose contact with the COSS/IWA during the ‘crossing the line’ procedure?
Stop the next train proceeding towards that area.
Tell the driver to:
Approach at caution.
Do not pass the location unless it is safe to do so.
Report back to you if the line is safe or not for trains to pass normally.
(Once confirmed, you can allow trains to proceed normally).
