peritoneum Flashcards
what is the peritoneum ?
serous membrane that lines the abdominal wall + cavity
what is the function of the peritoneum ?
fixes organs on the abdomen in place + protects them
what are the 2 parts of the peritoneum ?
parietal peritoneum
visceral peritoneum
what does the parietal peritoneum cover ?
lines the internal surface of the abdomen + pelvic wall
what does the visceral peritoneum cover ?
lines walls of organs
what is the peritoneal cavity ?
gap between the visceral + parietal peritoneum that contains a serous fluid
what produces the fluid found in the peritoneal cavity ?
serous membranes of the peritoneum
what are the 3 ways the visceral peritoneum covers organs ?
intraperitoneal visera
mesoperitoneal visera
retroperitoneal visera
what are intraperitoneal visera organs ?
organs completed covered by the visceral peritoneum
e.g : stomach , spleen
what is a mesoperitoneal organ ?
an organ that is discovered by visceral peritoneum at 3 different sites
e.g liver
what is a retroperitoneal organ ?
an organ that is only covered by visceral peritoneum at 1 site
e.g kidney
how does the parietal peritoneum continue into the visceral peritoneum ?
through 4 ligaments
name the ligaments that connect the parietal + visceral peritoneum
falciform ligament
gastrohepatic ligament
gastrosplenic ligament
splenorenal ligament
what does the falciform ligament connect ?
visceral peritoneum on liver to parietal peritoneum on abdominal wall
what does the gastrohepatic ligament connect ?
liver to the stomach
what does the gastrosplenic ligament connect ?
stomach to the spleen
what does the splenorenal ligament connect ?
the spleen to the kidneys
what is the lesser omentum ?
all the ligaments under the liver but above the lesser curvature of the stomach
what 2 ligaments are found in the lesser omentum ?
gastroheptic ligament
duodenalhepatic ligament
what is the greater omentum ?
structure that contains all ligaments above the greater curvature of the stomach
what 3 ligaments are found in the greater omentum ?
gastrophrenic
gastrosplenic
gastrocolic ligament
how many layers of the greater omentum made up of ?
4
what is mesentery ?
membrane that connects intestines to posterior abdominal wall
what does the mesentery do ?
forms a pathway for blood supply
what is the omental bursa ? what is another name for it ?
fluid filled sac
also called lesser sac
where is the lesser sac ?
behind the stomach
where is the greater sac ?
everywhere else in the abdominal cavity excluding the stomach
what are the anterior boarders of the lesser sac ?
- lesser omentum
- stomach
gastrocolic ligament - gastrosplenic ligament
what are the inferior boarders of the lesser sac ?
transverse mesocolon
transverse colon
what is the superior boarder of the lesser sac ?
liver
what is the posterior boarder of the lesser sac ?
parietal peritoneum
what is the name of the sac that allows the greater + lesser sac to flow into one another ?
omental foramen
how many peritoneal fold do women have ?
what are the names of the pouches ?
2
vesicouterine pouch
rectouterine pouch
how many peritoneal folds do men have ?
what is the name ?
1
rectovesical pouch
