What is Meralgia Paraesthetica?
Localised sensory symptoms of the outer thigh, caused by compression of the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve - mononeuropathy.
Epidemiology of Meralgia Paraesthetica.
- 30-40.
- Men > Women.
- Diabetes > Non-Diabetes.
Risk Factors of Meralgia Paraesthetica (7).
- Obesity.
- Pregnancy.
- Tense Ascites.
- Trauma.
- Iatrogenic.
- Various Sports.
- Idiopathic.
Anatomy of Lateral Femoral Cutaneous Nerve of Thigh( 2).
- L1, L2, L3.
2. Behind Psoas Muscle, Around Surface of Iliac, Under Inguinal Ligament onto Thigh, Medial and Inferior to ASIS.
Functions of Lateral Femoral Cutaneous Nerve of Thigh.
ONLY SENSORY : Upper Outer Thigh.
Clinical Presentation of Meralgia Paraesthetica.
Abnormal Sensations - Dysaesthesia and Loss of Sensation - Anaesthesia in Nerve Distribution (Upper Outer Thigh) :
- Burning.
- Numbness.
- Pins and Needles.
- Cold Sensation.
- Hair Loss.
- Aggravated by Walking/Standing and Hip Extension but Relieved by Sitting.
Investigations of Meralgia Paraesthetica.
- Diagnosis : Clinical - History and Examination.
What special test is used to diagnose Meralgia Paraesthetica?
Deep palpation just below the ASIS - PELVIC COMPRESSION.
Management of Meralgia Paraesthetica (3).
- Conservative - Rest, Looser Clothing, Weight Loss and Physiotherapy.
- Medical - Analgesia : Paracetamol, NSAIDs, Neuropathic Analgesia, Local Injections.
- Surgical - Decompression, Transection, Resection.
