Perceptual Testing Flashcards
What is an indication of laterality/directionality?
child has difficulty with L/R on self or reverses letters/words/numbers
How many subtests are in Piaget’s L/R test?
5
What is laterality?
awareness of left/right on self
What is directionality?
awareness of left/right in space
How many questions must a child get right in Piaget’s L/R to get credit?
all of them
What is Piaget R/L part A?
show me your right hand, left leg, left ear, right leg, etc
What is Piaget R/L part B?
sitting opposite the child, show me my right hand, my left hand, my left leg, my right leg
What is Piaget R/L part C?
place a coin on the table to the left and pencil to the right, is the pencil to the right or left, is the penny to the right or left, have child go to other side of the table and ask again
What is Piaget R/L part D?
sit opposite the child with a coin in your right hand and a bracelet or watch on your left arm, is the penny in my right had or left, is the bracelet on my right arm or my left arm
What is Piaget R/L part E?
place pencil key and coin on table, is the pencil to the left or right of the key, is the pencil to the right or left of the penny, is the key to the left or right of the penny, etc
What Piaget tests should a 5/6 year old pass?
just A
What age should pass A and C of Piaget?
7
What age should pass A, B, C, and D of Piaget?
8-10 year olds
What age should pass A-E of Piaget?
11 and older
How is Piaget R/L scored?
pass vs not pass, no statistics, record observations
What are systematic reversals?
child uses their L/R when faced with person 180 degrees, “show me my right hand” child points with her right hand, and if they are wrong on the child they are correct on you
What are two tests for reversals?
Jordan L/R reversal (5-18) and Gardner frequency reversal
What is the Jordan L/R level 1A?
child has to identify which drawing in a row is reversed
How do you score the Jordan L/R?
all incorrect answers: total # reversed not marked and correctly written marked
What is the Jordan L/R level 1B?
cover all other lines, child has to cross off all letters and numbers written backwards
What is the Jordan L/R level 2A?
ages 9-18, 20 rows of words, child identifies words where letters are backwards
What is the Jordan L/R level 2B?
ages 9-18, 20 sentences, child has to identify sentences with words written backwards
What is the Jordan L/R level 2C?
child indicates which letters in the second column are out of sequence when compared to those in the first column
How many parts does the Gardner Reversal frequency test have?
3
What is part 1 of the Gardner Reversal frequency test?
child is asked to write letters and numbers as they are dictated, no time limit, letters are to be written in lower case
How do you score part 1 of the gardner reversal frequency test?
unknowns and incorrect
What is part 2 of the Gardner reversal frequency test?
mark which of the pairs is backwards
What is part 3 of the Gardner reversal frequency test?
indicate to the right which figure matches the one on the left, don’t usually do this part in clinic
What is visual motor integration?
handwriting and “keep you eye on the ball”
What is auditory visual integration?
hear a story and picture it and phonics
What are symptoms of a visual motor integration problem?
sloppy handwriting, writes letters that are different sizes, can’t stay on line when writing, clumsy in sports
What are two visual motor integration tests?
Beery and Wold Sentence Copy
What are subtests of Beery?
motor coordination, visual perception, and VMI
What is the motor coordination Beery subtest?
to look at motor coordination as a factor for poor performance, draw the shapes dot to dot
What is the visual perception Beery subtest?
to look at visual perception as a factor for poor performance, visual discrimination of shapes
What is the VMI (visual motor integration) Beery subtest?
copy the shape in the box below, cannot erase, not timed, can turn the paper
Where should you start the VMI for 5+ vs < age 5?
shape 4 and start with 1 copy respectively
How is the VMI scored?
stop when 3 incorrect in a row, specific criteria for line size, angles, spaces between lines, need a ruler and protractor
What observations can be made during VMI?
motor overflow, segmentation, poor awareness of space, turning page to complete shape
What is the wold sentence copy test?
test of visual motor integration where child copies sentence while being timed
What grade levels can take the wold sentence copy test?
grades 2-8
T/F the wold sentence copy tests calculates the letters per minute the child is able to execute and compares it to the expected for grade level
true
What is the qualitative scoring for wold sentence copy test?
how child holds paper/pencil, working distance, letter spacing
What is the quantitative scoring for wold sentence copy test?
calculates letters per minute child is able to execute and compares to expected for grade level, divide time in seconds by 6600 for letters/minute, stop by 3-5 minutes
What is the auditory visual integration test?
20 test plates (and 3 examples) of tapping patterns
How does the auditory visual integration test work?
examiner taps under the table out of sight from the child with 1/2 second between short intervals, and 2 second between long, the child points to the auditory pattern
How is the auditory visual integration test scored?
1 point for each correct response
