Perception Flashcards
Gestalt
Whole is greater than the sum of its parts
A big tank is bigger than the individual, smaller tanks that make up the whole tank
Perception
The interpretation of stimuli from the world around us
Seeing a owl in a cloud and another person sees a tree
Figure ground
The organization of the visual field of seperating the stand out objects from the background.
The animals in the center ring are the figure and the people at the show watching, the ground, and the other things are the background
Grouping
Placing stimuli or objects in understandable groups
Those that wear a hoover orange h on their shirt in x country meet are immediately assumed to be hoover
Depth perception
Ability to see in three dimensions and judge distance
How far away a tennis ball is
Visual cliff
Keeps infants safe while studying if infants will have good depth perception and will walk over the glass
Binocular cues
Depth cues that require the use of both eyes
Using binoculars
Monocular cues
Depth cues that require the use of one eye
Using a telescope
Retinal disparity
Difference in images seen with the left eye and the right eye retinas
Convergence
Tension in the eye muscles when eyes track inwards to focus on objects closer
Holding fingers and bringing them closer and closer
Perceptual constancy
Perceiving the size, shape, and lightness of an object as unchanging, even as the retinal image of the object changes
A chair will be in the same place, even as we move farther away or change the angle of looking at it
Perceptual set
Expectations that cause you to perceive something one way and not another
If you really like one place you will be more positive about it than others
Schemes
Concepts or mental frameworks that help us organize the world
Seeing faces
Context
Setting or environment in which we interpret sensory stimulation
Being on a ride that malfunctioned, and all the lights come on and spoil the ride
Extra sensory perception
Controversial claim that perception can occur apart from sensory input
Ability to have telepathy
