perception 1 Flashcards
what is the aim of perception?
acquire knowledge about environment via senses
what is sensation?
transform physical stimuli to electrical signals
what is perception?
intepret signals for conscious awareness and action
what are the stages of the perceptual process?
distal stimuli
proximal stimuli
sensation
perception
what is the distal stimuli?
the object
what is the proximal stimuli?
inverted image
who said perception is evolutionary?
Aristotle
why is perception evolutionary?
aids the survival and reproduction of organisms
can seek out desirable objects and avoid dangerous ones
what is touch perception?
somatosensory
what is visual perception?
visual
what is taste perception?
gustatory
what is hearing perception?
auditory
what is smell perception?
olfactory
what is the truth in perception?
true to an extent- or senses wouldn’t evolve
but not necessarily reality
what is an illusion?
where perception differs from reality
what can illusions provide insight into?
process of sensation and perception
what are ambiguous figures?
images which can give 2 or more unique perceptions
what are ambiguous sounds?
produce multiple bistable and stable perceptions eg) Laurel and Yannie
what are impossible objects?
sensory input is intepreted by the brain as representing physically impossible scenarios
what is perception as intepretation?
objects are not perceived directly- brain tries to figure out what is there based on available information
what is top down processing?
use knowledge about the world’s structure to influence perception= conceptually driven
what is bottom up processing?
using information from the senses to make judgements about the world based on this information= data driven
what is the constructivist theory of perception?
emphasises top down processing
inadequate information from senses augmented by unconscious inference
illusions best described as rational inferences
Gregory
what is the direct theory of perception?
emphasises bottom up processing
many cues in the natural world provide information on the structure of the environment
perceiver interacts with environment
