People And The Environment Flashcards
Global population risen rapidly since 1800
. 1804- world population to reach 1 billion
. 1950- global population increased from 2.5 billion to 7.5 billion in 2017
. Growth since 1950s driven by developing countries - life expectancy increased and death rates decreased
. Urban population are increasing faster then rural population, so population is less evenly distributed
Population is effected by physical environment
. Climate- few people who live in arid areas but few people live in temperate areas, because it’s easier to produce food
- climate change can effect population distribution e.g. in coastal areas where sea level are rising, people are moving inland because levels of nutrition is falling.
. Soil- soil fertility determines the amount and type of food that cane be produced in region e.g Naples is in close proximity to a volcanoe, where soil fertility is high
- Bangladesh has large floodplains which are very fertile. This increases agricultural yields, feeding a large population.
- soil erosion can cause people to migrate to other places as agriculture becomes more difficult
. Resource distribution- population growth and distribution are linked to availability of water and other natural resources e.g. less people live in deserts due to lack of water
- lack of safe water can lead to food security and health problems which may lead to death. This can decrease population in some areas
- Energy and minerals ( coal, oil and gold) can cause local concentration of people
Development effected population change
Neolithic revolution- 12000 years ago people in some areas developed agriculture ( Western Asia and Eastern China). There lifestyles changed from hunting food to farming in permanent settlements. Population increased as food supply become more reliable
Industrial revolution- from 1760- 1850 there was a rapid rise in machinery factories in developed countries which effected population e.g Britain population increased more than double because death rates fell due to increase food production and more money meant more people had better diets
