record and the first to reach that intensity since
. Massive storm surges and winds up to 145mph
Location:
. It went past Haiti, Jamaica and the Dominican Republic and destructive storm surges to the coast of northern Florida, Georgia and South Carolina
Physical causes: (2)
. Sea level rises which extended the reach of the storm surge
. Atmospheric moisture above the southeast of US, so climate change dries resulting in extreme precipitation
Human causes:
. (Effecting Haiti) The nation is the poorest in the wester hemisphere- due to its turbulent history of colonisation and slavery
. There is a safe haven for people who where evacuated ( Hispaniola Island) however there is a geographical limit to where people can stay
Economic impacts:
Short term:
. Core logic, a California based real estate data firm, estimated the storm could cause up to $ 189 billion in the storm surge damage yo residential property in Florida alone
Long term:
. Walt Disney world, universal studios Florida and sea world closed
. Between $4 million to $6 million dollars from wind and storm surge damage
Social impacts:
Short term:
. 500 + people lost their lives and 2.2 million where affected
. The damage to critical water and sanitation contributed to an increase in number of cholera cases
Long term:
. The vaccine cold chain was destroyed
Immediate responses:
. The WBG in partnership with the inter American development bank, supported clients through phone surveys and satellites
. Emergency sanitation were implemented
Long term:
. Reconstruction of roads and buildings
. Schools where refurnished
. Portable solar lamps were made
(These rapid interventions did not only minimise wide spread famine , but they also helped contain the cholera outbreak and limit migration of violence)
