Food Production And Consumption Flashcards
Global food production is unevenly distributed
. East Asia and North America produce a lot food due to
- climate is good for farming
- lots of investment in farming
. Central America and Africa produce small amount of food due to:
- a lack of resources and funding for farming equipment
- unstable climate= some areas don’t get enough rainfall
- large area of land are unsuitable for farming E.g mountains or have poor quality soils
Global food consumption is Unevenly distributed
. More developed areas like North America and Europe consume A lot. They can afford to import large variety of foods and many people have high disposable incomes so can afford more food
. Less developed countries like Africa and parts of South America and Asia consume less food per person as they can’t afford as much food.
. Some people may have limited access to food
Agricultural productivity
The measure of the amount of food that is produced in the area- ratio of agricultural input and output
Agricultural systems (5)
. Commercial farming
. Subsistence farming
. Intensive farming
. Extensive farming
. Nomadic farming
Commercial farming
The production and crops to make profit. It’s high in agricultural productivity and is more common in developed countries
Subsistence farming
When just enough food is grown to feed the family. It’s common in Africa and Asia and has lower agricultural productivity
Intensive farming
As much as possible is produced from the land
. Capital intensive- farming has high input of capital and low input of labour
. Labour intensive- farming has high input of labour and low input of Capital
Extensive farming
Low capital and low labour input for the area of land so produces less food.
Extensive farming tend to have less impact on the environment and better animal welfare
Nomadic farming
Farmers move from place to place to grow crops or graze animals on different land
