pcl Flashcards
Where does the posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) run, and what is its function?
The posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) runs from the posterior intercondylar area of the tibia to the lateral aspect of the medial femoral condyle in the intercondylar notch. The ligament prevents posterior displacement of the tibia in relation to the femur.
What are the most common causes of a PCL injury?
The most common causes of a PCL injury are landing on the tibia with a flexed knee or hitting a dashboard in a motor vehicle accident with a flexed knee.
Are isolated PCL tears common?
Isolated PCL tears are not common and often involve other knee structures such as ACL, MCL, LCL, and menisci.
What are the common signs and symptoms of a PCL injury?
Swelling and mild pain may be present, but often the patient is asymptomatic.
What might a patient report if they have a PCL injury?
the patient may report feeling as if the femur is sliding off the tibia.
Which special tests help identify a PCL tear?
Special tests to identify the presence of a PCL tear include the posterior drawer test and posterior sag sign
What are the initial treatments for a PCL injury?
initially RICE, NSAIDs, and analgesics as needed
How does the surgical procedure for a PCL injury compare to ACL surgery?
Surgical treatment can occur, however, the procedure is not as evolved as the procedure for the ACL.
What does physical therapy treatment for a PCL injury include?
Physical therapy treatment includes lower extremity strengthening exercises and functional progression.
What precautions are taken after PCL surgery?
If surgery is performed, isolated hamstrings exercises are often avoided for a minimum of six weeks.
