lateral epicondylitis Flashcards
What is lateral epicondylitis?
An irritation or inflammation of the common extensor muscles at their origin on the lateral epicondyle of the humerus.
Who is at the greatest risk of developing lateral epicondylitis?
Individuals who participate in racquet sports or activities requiring throwing.
What is the primary cause (etiology) of lateral epicondylitis?
Eccentric loading of the wrist extensor muscles, especially the extensor carpi radialis brevis, resulting in microtrauma.
What equipment issues may contribute to lateral epicondylitis?
Poor mechanics or faulty equipment, like a tennis racquet with too small a handle or strings with excessive tension.
Which age group is most commonly affected by lateral epicondylitis?
Individuals between 30 and 50 years of age.
Where is pain typically felt in lateral epicondylitis?
Immediately anterior or distal to the lateral epicondyle of the humerus.
What is the goal of physical therapy for lateral epicondylitis?
To increase the strength, flexibility, and endurance of the wrist extensors.
What activities worsen the pain in lateral epicondylitis?
Repetition and resisted wrist extension.
What are the initial treatments for lateral epicondylitis?
RICE (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation), NSAIDs, and activity modification.
How can a strap help alleviate symptoms of lateral epicondylitis?
A strap placed 2-3 inches distal to the elbow joint can reduce muscular tension on the epicondyle, diminishing or eliminating symptoms.
