PAW: Muscles (except Diaphragm) + Thoracolumbar Fascia Flashcards
Psoas Major origin
- lumbar vertebare All transverse processes, Side of bodies & intervertebral discs (tendinous Arches bridging over lumbar vessels)
Psoas Major insertion
- Joins Iliacus to for Ilio-psoas
- passes deep to inguinal ligament to insert into lesser trochanter of Femur
Nerve Supply of Psoas Major
L2,3,4
Action of Psoas Major
- Main thigh flexor
- Medial rotator
- lateral Bending of trunk (one side)
- Foreward bending of trunk (both sides)
- lateral rotator only when Neck of femur is fractured due to change in rotational Axis
Origin of psoas Minor
Last thoracic & first lumbar vertebrae
Insertion of Psoas Minor
- Descends in front of psoas Major
- Inserted in Iliopectineal Eminence
Nerve supply of Psoas Minor
L1 (first lumbar Nerve)
Action of psoas Minor
Assisting in trunk flexion
(present only in 60 % of people)
Origin of Quadratus Lumborum
- Iliolumbar ligament
- medial of Inner lip of iliac crest
Insertion of Quadratus Lumborum
- Medial 1/2 of last rib
- upper 4 lumbar vertebra transverse proccess tips
Nerve supply of Quadratus Lumborum
T12,L1,L2,L3,L4
Action of Quadratus Lumborum
- Fixes last rib to help Diaphragm contract efficiently
- bending (lateral flextion) of vertebral column (one side)
- Extension of lumbar part of Vertebral column (both sides)
Iliacus Origin
Iliac fossa
Iliacus Insertion
Ilio-psoas tendon descends behind inguinal Canal & inserts into Lesser trochanter of Femur
Iliacus Nerve supply
(main trunk of) Femoral N
Iliacus Action
thigh flextion
Anterior relations of Psoas Major in Abdomin & pelvis
- Medial Arcute ligament of Diaphragm
- Psoas Minor
- Kidney
- renal Vessels
- Ureter
- Gonadal Vessels
- Genitofemoral N
- Duodenum (right side= 3rd part, left side= 4th part)
- ileum end (right side) & descending Colon (left side)
- Inguinal Ligament
posterior relations of Psoas Major in Abdomin & pelvis
- Lumbar ver. transverse process
- Lumbar Arteries
- Lumbar Nerves forming lumbar plexus
- medial edge of Quadratus lumborum
Medial relations of Psoas Major in Abdomin & pelvis
- Sympathetic Chain
- External Iliac Vessles
- obturator Nerve
- Lumbosacral trunk
- Left side= Aorta, right side= IVC
Lateral relations of Psoas Major in Abdomin & pelvis
- Quadratus Lumborum
- iliacus
- iliohypogastric N
- Ilioinguinal N
- lateral cutaneous N of thigh
- Femoral N
Anterior relations of Psoas Major in thigh
Femoral Artery (inside femoral Sheath)
posterior relations of Psoas Major in thigh
hip joint capsule
Medial relations of Psoas Major in thigh
Pectineus muscle
lateral relations of Psoas Major in thigh
Femoral N (between the psoas major & iliacus)
Thickening of Psoas Fascia above forms
medial Arcute ligament
Clinal Importance of Psoas Fascia
during Spine T.B, it forms psoas Cold Abcess, showing abdominal & thigh swelling with Cross fluctuation in between
Anterior layer of Thoracolumbar Fascia Covers
Anterior Aspect of Quadratus Lumborum (and thickens above to form lateral Arcuate ligament)
middle layer of Thoracolumbar fascia Covers
Posterior aspect of Quadratus Lumborum (seperating it from sacrospinalis muscle)
Posterior layer of Thoracolumbar fasica Covers
Medial part of back of Sacrospinalis & fuses with middle layer of Back of lumabr Fascia
